Undershaw EH Listing Latest!

Well I've finally had the opportunity to review the latest report from English Heritage on the request to raise Undershaw's listing status from Grade II upwards.

It makes predictably depressing reading. In short, the listing is being left as it is but with a few modifications being made to its file.

As I understand it, EH essentially states that ACD's fame as an author is pretty much the only reason that house is even Grade II listed. The house itself is not considered to be in possession of any features that would warrant an increase in protection. The report also states that unless some significant new information comes to light EH won't consider conducting any further reviews.

To say I am not impressed is an understatement. It seems that in English Heritage we have an organisation that is content to watch this part of it vanish.

  1. Totally agree with you, Alistair. I only became aware yesterday of English Heritage's decision and UPT Director John Gibson's appeal, as contained on his Listing Review Request Form...

"There has been extremely significant irregularity in the
process, that could not be more serious, indicating that the
    decision was wrongly made."

"Appears prejudged from the very top (C.E.O.) of English Heritage...".

Something very amiss going on but unless we get Sherlock Holmes on the case the truth about what has been going on behind the scenes may very well never see the light of day...

"How often have I said to you that when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth?"
